Jefferson Hills Lions Club of Pennsylvania

ABOUT US

In the beginning, it was the Clairton Lions Club, who founded and sponsored the Jefferson Borough Lions Club. Dr. Everett F. Stabler, of the Clairton Lions Club invited Harold L. and Floyd V. Miller to have a meeting with him at his home to discuss forming a Lions Club in Jefferson Borough. They accepted his invitation and agreed to call men to attend prelimnary meetings. They met in a back room at the Large Hotel for about the first three months.

The certificate of membership from the PA State Council of Lions Clubs was issued January 22, 195e. The International Association of Lions Clubs Charter was issued April 2, 1953. On April 28, 1953, District Governor James O. Wrigley presented the charter at the Youghiogheny Country Club.

Of the original 48 charter members, Lion George M. Shawl was the the only member with continuous service until his passing Febraury 11, 2003 at age 93, a span of 50 years. Another milestone was reached November 4, 1997 when the late Betty Rankin became the first woman to join our club and in November 2003 Nancy Schmidt became our first woman president. In the time frame since, another 22 women received membership leaving in their wake an impressive record of service. Due to postal regulations in 1999, the Jefferson Borough Lions Club was renamed the Jefferson Hills Lions Club. With the opportunity to server over the last 55 years, we have compiled a proud, yet humble history of service to the International Association, Multiple District 14, and District 14-B as well as the Borough of Jefferson Hills.

Some of the past fundraising activities of the Jefferson Hills Lions Club include: selling brooms, garbage can liners, Easter candy, mints, batteries, coloring books, a doll house, Fashion Show and our very own home-made apple cider. During October, "White Cane Month," we solicit for nine days and yearly place collection canes throughout our community businesses. During Community Day we sell hot dogs, soda and pastry. Our pancake socials include craft tables, bake sale and a Chinese Auction. In addition we had a circus and a penny auction that included an automobile. Also there were basketball tournaments, night at the races, bingo-rama, sight saver appeal letters, flea markets, super bowl pools, spaghetti dinners; and recycled aluminum products that included 2,830,500 pull tabs with proceeds donated to Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh, PA as well as 53,586 cans with proceeds to the club administrative fund. In total, 3,797 pounds of aluminum product was recycled.

Our community projects include: Adopt A Highway, Memorial Day Parade, construction of the 885 Jefferson Hills Park Pavilion, provided 12 picnic tables for the Park Pavilion and installed 2 electronic score boards on baseball fields in memory of Lion Domenic Quatto. We also founded the Jefferson Hills Library and to this day contribute books in memory of deceased Lions members or their immediate family. In addition, we provide the school system with scholarships, support the Math Club and Honor Club Society, contribute anti-drug books covers and offered free vision screening to children betwee six-months to five years of age inclusive. We built a wheelchair ramp, provided invalid accessories, collected hearing aids and eyeglasses as well as buying eyeglasses for those in need. Also starting in 2004, we assembled and delivered fruit baskets to those in need or lonely during the Christmas season.

Dristrict Activities include: the District Fall Rally, Christmas Around the World, Keystone Blind Bowlers Tournament, and Melvin Jones Breakfast, Governor's Spring Party, UPMC McKeesport Hospital Diabetes Center, Special Olympics as well as training sessions and seminars. Sponsored campers to PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp and participated at spring work week-end and Lions Appreciation Day, a constant 100% Beacon Lodge 500 Club as well as providing funds for various District and State Projects. We have also served as host for Region 2 Joint Zone meetings as well as Zone A and Region 2 socials. Over the years our members have attended countless State and International Conventions. In the 1993 State Convention, we took second place in the parade.

Social activities include: Sweetheart Night, family picnic, Christmas Party and a monthly newsletter to keep our membership informed of Club, District and International activities. Through fund-raising projects, the Jefferson Hills Lions have contributed thousands upon thousands of dollars to Blind and Community organizations. This year alone (2008) we will donate approximately $7,750 to 15 agencies within the Blind Community, and 13 agencies within the Borough of Jefferson Hills.

During this time frame, 44 members have served as President, 9 as Secretary and 6 as Treasurer. 15 members received the Melvin Jones Fellowship, 4 members received the PA Fellowship and 7 members as "Lion of the Year."
