About US . . .

HOMESTEAD DISTRICT LIONS CLUB was chartered February 12, 1948, sponsored by the Swissvale Lions Club.  It received its charter from District Governor Boyd S. Sharp, of the Washington Lions Club.  The first president was Harold T. Whetstone; Secretary was Stephen B. Nagy and Treasurer was James Allison.

Many Lions from this Club have been active in the District including Lion Martin A. Yuhasz who was District Governor in 1959-60, Richard P. Mader who was District Governor in 1979-80, Albert R. Bugel, Morton J. Keisler, Randall Williams, and John Lang.

The Club has sponsored four other Lions Clubs: Lincoln Place in 1948, West Mifflin in 1953, Whitaker-Munhall Gardens in 1954, and Hazelwood in 1957.

The Club has held all of the usual fund-raising activities, and some not so usual.  A local citizen was so impressed with the work of the Lions that she donated a house to them in her will.  Fund raising events in the early days included a raffle for a Cadillac car, The Mammoth Auctions at old Forbes Field, Spaghetti Dinners and of course the famous Broom Sales.

The Club has distributed an amount estimated to be $250,000 to Lions charities, and to the less fortunate of the community.  The Club’s top membership was 52 in 1950-51
