Our History . . .

BRADDOCK LIONS CLUB was sponsored by the Wilkinsburg Lions Club, and was chartered on March 26, 1940.

The first President was Walter Whitehead, and the first Secretary was William Weaver.  Lion Joseph P. Zorn served for a long term of years as Secretary, and also served the District on the Cabinet.  Charter Member Carl W. Brueck served as District Governor in 1950-51, and was a candidate for International Director in 1955.  Lion Dr. Harry Kopsofsky served as Deputy District Governor, and Lion Robert R. Cortese was District Governor in 1980-81.

The Braddock Lions Club was famous for perfect attendance, and for many years reported 100% attendance on its monthly M&A reports.  A famous friend of the Club was Lion Luke Barnett, who was an internationally-known prankster, who pulled the legs of famous people from California to Europe.

In 1950 the Past Presidents of the Bethel Township Lions (later to be renamed as the Bethel Park Lions Club) got together and hired Lion Luke to visit their Club and “fool” their President, Lion Malcolm F. Lovejoy.  A Zone Meeting was arranged, with visitors from all over, and Luke was introduced as a coal miner—a member from some little town in Washington County.  All went well until the President tried to introduce the guests.  When it was Luke’s turn he took the floor—and kept it for an hour—in spite of all attempts to shut him up by the President.
